Environment Ideation and Lighting Practice

I've been working on some environment and lighting practice, I don't do it nearly as often as I should. These both need a lot of refining, but it's progress. The upper one is for my Sea Treader illustration and the lower is for the little soldier girl I'm working on. I'm having a tricky time with an environment for my drunken boxer, but some Scottish tavern research should clear that right up.

The concept for my third zbrush sculpt. He's a Scottish drunken boxer named Valentulus. Gingers forever.

Researchin' Undersea Ruins and Anteaters....

I'm thinking about putting my Sea Treader creature in a post-Apocalyptic underwater realm. I've taken particular interest in a sunken Rio de Janeiro as the imagery would be interesting and symbolic. I've been researching and here's some of the lovely reference I found.

Rendering Studies

I've never really rendered like a product/transportation designer before, so I gave it a try.

Just an Update

My fourth sculpt in progress, a creepy cave-dwelling dragon. I'll be painting him soon but there are some details I'd like to refine. I also want to add hard claws and such.
Also, I've nailed down the design for my first big project. I call him the Seatreader. I can't wait to start sculpting this guy.

Some Symmetry

First, I tried out some symmetry studies from altered photographs. It was alright, and I like some of the results, but I had a lot more fun doing symmetry studies from my imagination. They feel more like characters to me.

So my first ever Zbrush Sculpt:

I'm pretty pleased so far.
Then I made someone who looks a little happier. I'd still like to touch her up a bit:

And because I can, Tom Hiddleston. He's a work in progress:

An Independent Study Begins

Well, it's the start of my final year at CCS. I've managed to get an independent study approved and this is where I'll be posting my work as I go along.

The purpose of the course is to utilize Zbrush sculpts in polished digital illustrations. I'll be creating the sculpts following the syllabus guidelines, posing the characters, and placing them into a finished illustration with an environment that suits them.

I am uncontrollably excited for this course and I can't wait to get started.
